Certified Organic Colors are a select group of “Natural” Colors that contain ingredients that are in compliance with the USDA National Organic Program and which have been certified by an approved independent organic certification agency. The USDA’s National Organic Program certifies products as organic based on regulated organic farming, handling, manufacturing, distribution and labeling practices.
“Organic Compliant” Colors are “nonorganically produced agricultural products may be used as ingredients in or on processed products labeled as “organic,” only in accordance with any restrictions specified in this section, and only when the product is not commercially available in organic form” (extracted from the USDA’s National Organic Program’s “National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances”).
The NOP clearly defines the levels of non-organic ingredients allowed in Organic products, and the different product labeling options available.
